There are 80,000 young people currently homeless in the UK – that’s tough! National Grid has joined forces with a group of dedicated national businesses and UK leading homeless charities, with one common goal – to end youth homelessness.
The End Youth Homelessness alliance aims to lobby local and national government to get homeless young people two life essentials – a home and a job.
The alliance urges members of the public and businesses to pledge their support online, by signing the End Youth Homelessness petition. Not only will this show support, but it will raise awareness of the problems facing homeless young people today as, despite many years of improvement through the work of charities and by local and national government, youth homelessness is still with us and all indications are that it is set to increase.
Mike Westcott, Global HR Director, said: “The End Youth Homelessness alliance is a unique example of charities and major commerce coming together to bring about real change on a key social issue. This is the first time that the voluntary sector and private businesses have joined forces to tackle youth homelessness.
“Despite the significant efforts of the public and voluntary sector with various national and local government strategies, youth homelessness is on the increase. It is happening right across the country in our urban centres, but also in our rural communities. A major reason for this is the complex nature of the root causes of the problem and the need for greater awareness of those causes. The alliance aims to ensure that government, the public, and private and voluntary sectors work with young people to develop real opportunities.”
The alliance aims to tackle youth homelessness by:
- Creating the largest and most influential example of collaboration and cooperation in the field of youth homelessness, by bringing together the leading charities with key businesses.
- Pooling expertise and knowledge so that government – whether national or local – can draw on in-depth skills and insight from one consistent and multi-faceted group.
- Work together on practical measures to tackle the multiple root causes and halt the unintended consequences of the current fragmented multi-agency response to youth homelessness.
