A National Grid football team representing our Pride LGBT supporters’ network team finished runner-up at Leicester Wildecats football tournament, scooping the Fair Play award in the process.
The annual 6-a-side tournament, now in its twenty-fifth year, took place during the Leicester Pride week, and this year welcomed over 25 teams to the competition.
The National Grid, which was pulled together by Dave Woodcock, Refurbishment Centre Manager, ETAM, achieved its best ever position by reaching the final where they were defeated by ‘Birmingham 1’.
On route to the final, the National Grid team won all 8 of their games before the final defeat – a game where Birmingham 1 had three extra players
The day was capped off by the team being awarded the ‘Fair Play’ award for their good sporting behaviour
On winning the award, Dave said: “It was a hot day with a relentless sun in the sky and everyone was exhausted following the final whistle.
“Although we were disappointed to lose in the final game it was wonderful to be awarded the fair play award which epitomises the National Grid values clearly demonstrated on the day by all the players and I was very proud to Captain such a great team. Maybe next year will be our year!”
