Enabling is National Grid’s disability Employee Resource Group (ERG). It’s open to all employees, not just employees who might consider themselves to have a disability or impairment. Many of us also have relatives or friends who are disabled.
We believe that with the right support, every single one of our employees can succeed regardless of disability and we have echoed this in our refreshed ambition statement for National Grid:
“A company that sees ability rather than disability and enables everybody to reach their full potential.”
People often feel uncomfortable talking about disabilities, as they feel that they are going to say the wrong thing – and often people with disabilities may feel they are unable to disclose a disability for fear that this will, in some way, impact their working life or their colleagues behaviour.
By being open and talking about disability, we can dispel these myths and rumours and be more aware and better equipped in declaring a disability of our own, or in working with and understanding the disability of others.
Enabling is pleased to sponsor National Grid’s EmployAbility Programme
EmployAbility provides supported internships to students with disabilities, thereby helping them to achieve permanent paid employment in the community.
Put simply we are ‘changing lives’ – the lives of members of our communities who felt business was closed to them. We are also shaping the values of our employees by providing them with enriching opportunities to be actively involved with, and in, our communities.
EmployAbility also increases engagement through involvement with inspirational members of society. Seeing how those with disabilities overcome barriers inspires others to break barriers too.
All this helps build a disability confident organisation with inclusive values.

Through our support, openness and respect for each other, we as National Grid can become confident in disclosing if we have a disability – in the knowledge that we will not be treated differently and that those concerned about ensuring that their business activities are inclusive have the support available.
The Enabling ERG is here to support our employees in achieving this and, ultimately, to drive success for all of our people. We want to dispel the myths and rumours around disability and help National Grid to become a company that sees ability rather than disability and enables everyone to reach their full potential.
