National Grid Metering (NGM) has completed necessary work on a live gas metering installation, identified as ‘high risk’ due to equipment age, poor condition and inappropriate location.
Remedial work to minimise the risk of failure and disruption of gas supply was critical, as the installation supports the Bretby Crematorium in Burton upon Trent; which, set in attractive woodland, provides a peaceful haven for remembrance.
The medium pressure (MP) industrial installation was very close to a domestic residence and in an inadequate space with difficult access – it also didn’t comply to current regulations.
The work was split across the various service providers and managed by NGM: TRIO, a Cadent-approved contractor, was responsible for the new MP service; NGM worked on the design and procurement of the new metering equipment; Manterfield Drilling carried out works needed to connect existing pipelines to new installation; and, AllGas1 installed the new metering equipment.
Bretby Crematorium also played a vital part in the work, as it installed a suitable base for the new installation and will make sure that the environment around it is well maintained to enable unrestricted access for future routine maintenance calls.
To achieve the exchange with the gas supply kept live, connections from the existing inlet and outlet pipework had to be extended to the new installation; enabling the uninterrupted supply to run in parallel. On completion, the old supply was then decommissioned and disconnected.
Teamwork between the service providers, end consumer and NGM’s engineers was vital to make this a success and ensure the integrity, safety and reliability of the assets.
Maxine Long, Head of National Grid Metering, visited the site and commented: “It is sometimes very easy, when based in our office environment, to take for granted the work that goes on across our 9.5m asset portfolio in the UK.
“Our NGM engineering teams, and those of our service partners, play an instrumental role in making sure we continue to lead the traditional gas metering market; with safe and reliable provision, installation and maintenance of gas metering products and services.
“Our heritage and expertise is, I believe, what sets us apart from our competitors and makes a difference for our customers.”
