10 October is World Mental Health Day. This week we are promoting the range of services and resources available at National Grid; providing you with tools and techniques to help improve your mental wellbeing and support your friends, family and colleagues.
Mental wellbeing at National Grid
What is your attitude to mental health and stress, particularly in the workplace? How should you work with colleagues who struggle with their mental wellbeing? If you need support with your own mental health, what adjustments to your working day and environment are considered ‘reasonable’?
We provide a range of services and resources to support the mental wellbeing of those who work at National Grid. We have also developed a company position on various aspects of mental wellbeing – it can be classed as a disability. This is how we promote consistency in the way we support colleagues who struggle, to make sure that we operate both efficiently and responsibly as a business.
Our resources include three videos that explain what you can do and expect, as a team member or manager:
General awareness: Learn about common mental health conditions and how to identify triggers. Learn how you can support colleagues and raise awareness.
Sensitive conversations: Managers need to feel equipped to prepare for and confidently accomplish a sensitive, or even difficult, conversation with a colleague about their mental health. Learn how to spot the signs, plan for a constructive conversation and where to get appropriate support.
Workplace adjustments: What reasonable adjustments can managers make and how can they manage the possible impact on the rest of their team? Learn how to identify suitable adjustments, consider the business impact and review effectiveness.
Make a pledge in your own words
Many thanks to around 500 of you who have pledged personally to support our ‘Time to Change’ programme, addressing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health. If you haven’t yet made a pledge, please do so – help us to achieve 1,000 pledges!
