We have once again successfully inspired young people from diverse backgrounds to pursue science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers.
Taking part in the recent Your Future, Your Ambition (YFYA) event for the sixth year in a row, we ran various activities and interactive workshops to inspire over 950 children aged 7 to 16.
YFYA started in 2012 with the aim of showcasing exciting STEM careers and this year’s event saw 25 organisations take part.
To mark National Grid’s commitment to YFYA, joint founder and director Rashada Harry presented Akshay Rupani – Project Officer at London Power Tunnels and our ONE employee resource group lead organiser for the event – with an accolade to acknowledge our continued involvement.
ONE led our activities to showcase the company, with volunteers from different parts of the business taking part – providing students with careers advice and holding interactive workshops on planning overhead line routes, to give students a practical insight into some of our engineering challenges. Attendees could also safely explore our gas compressor site at St Fergus, using virtual reality headsets, and get hands-on experience of VEX robots.
Talking about the event Akshay said: “It was great to participate in this successful event and drive both the STEM and diversity agenda. I’m sure our involvement inspires young minds and contributes to making the next generation of diverse engineers.”
